Controlled fire testing demonstrates early warning capabilities, while an evaluation of 7.2 billion real-world temperature readings shows no false alarms from normal fluctuations in the analyzed dataset.
Phoenix, AZ, USA, Oct 30 - Hoopo, a provider of asset intelligence solutions for global logistics, has announced an enhancement to its existing early fire detection algorithm for dry shipping containers, supported by extensive field evaluation, controlled fire testing, and an analysis of 7.2 billion real-world temperature readings.
Already integrated into Hoopo's hoopoSense Solar smart container solution, the technology is designed to identify abnormal temperature patterns that may indicate a developing fire, providing an additional layer of early warning at the individual container level.
In controlled testing, the system issued an alert approximately three minutes after fire onset, while a separate large-scale evaluation found no false alarms attributable to normal temperature fluctuations, excluding faulty sensors.
Not every temperature increase signals a fire.
According to Allianz's Safety and Shipping Review 2026, as cited by the World Shipping Council, a container ship fire occurs approximately every 17 days, underscoring the importance of reliable early fire detection in protecting vessels, cargo and crew.
Shipping containers are exposed to constantly changing conditions, from direct sunlight and extreme climates to daily heating and cooling cycles. At fleet scale, distinguishing these normal fluctuations from potentially dangerous thermal patterns is essential to avoiding unnecessary alerts and maintaining confidence in early detection systems.
To evaluate its enhanced algorithm's performance, Hoopo combined controlled fire tests with an analysis of 7.2 billion real-world temperature readings collected from hundreds of thousands of connected containers over several months, assessing both its ability to identify potential fire conditions and its false-alarm performance under normal operating conditions.
The analysis found no false alarms attributable to normal temperature fluctuations within the evaluated dataset, excluding cases involving faulty sensors. The dataset was used to evaluate the algorithm's false-alarm performance, not to develop or train it.
"The difficult part is not detecting heat. It's knowing when a temperature change deserves attention," said Dr. Ilan Lozovsky, Co-founder & CTO of Hoopo. "At fleet scale, false alarms quickly become an operational problem. Evaluating our algorithm against billions of real-world readings helps us understand how it behaves under the conditions containers experience every day."
Hoopo's early fire detection technology combines in-container infrared temperature sensing with an enhanced algorithm that evaluates both temperature and the rate at which it rises, rather than relying solely on fixed thresholds.
Integrated into the door-mounted hoopoSense Solar device, the sensor measures internal container temperature without requiring wiring or container modifications. The technology has also been evaluated through controlled fire tests to examine how fire-related temperature patterns differ from those observed during normal operations.
Research conducted by Lloyd's Register in collaboration with Hoopo has highlighted the limitations of conventional vessel-mounted fire detection systems, where fires developing inside sealed containers may not be immediately detected. In one controlled fire test, internal container temperatures exceeded 100°C, and Hoopo's system issued an alert approximately three minutes after fire onset.

Earlier warning can provide valuable time for assessment and response. By flagging abnormal thermal behavior at the individual container level, Hoopo's technology is designed to provide an additional warning signal, complementing existing maritime fire safety systems and onboard procedures.
"Container visibility is no longer enough. Shipping lines need intelligence that helps them anticipate risks, protect cargo and make better decisions," said Ittay Hayut, Co-founder & CEO of Hoopo. "Early fire detection is a powerful example of how connected container data can deliver value beyond tracking. Our focus is on making that intelligence an integral part of global maritime operations."
Early fire detection is part of Hoopo's broader smart container capabilities, alongside door-status monitoring, global location visibility and advanced fleet analytics.
Integrated into hoopoSense Solar, the technology is available as part of a solar-powered device designed for more than 12 years of operation and certified for ATEX Zone 1 environments.
